Canadian crude-oil production reaches record high in July

Canadian production of crude oil and equivalent products reached a record 27.8 million cubic metres in July, up 2.7% from a year earlier, Statistics Canada reported September 29.

The total was the highest monthly volume since the series began in 2016. Oil-sands production rose 1.8% to 18.4 million cubic metres, including a record 7.1 million cubic metres of synthetic crude.

Crude exports increased 3.0% to 21.5 million cubic metres. Shipments to destinations outside the United States rose 45% to 2.8 million cubic metres, with most moving through the Port of Vancouver. Exports to the United States slipped 1.3% but still accounted for 18.7 million cubic metres.

Electricity generation rose 8.4% year over year to 54.2 million megawatt-hours, led by hydroelectric gains in Manitoba and British Columbia. Electricity exports to the United States increased 80.6% to 6.0 million megawatt-hours, the highest level since August 2022. Statistics Canada said primary energy production overall increased 2.7% year over year.
