Québec reviews renewable-gas rules; current regulation remains

Québec has opened a review of how renewable-source gas should be regulated and supported, while confirming that the current rules remain in force.

The government has asked the Régie de l’énergie to submit recommendations by the end of November 2026. An expert report is expected in February 2027.

Québec says a regulatory change proposed in spring 2026 was not enacted. The current regulation therefore continues to apply while the review is underway.

The province has also renewed its support program for renewable gas production and converted it to a call-for-projects format. The first call is expected in 2027, after the Régie’s recommendations.

The stated goal is to encourage competitive local supply, reduce reliance on imports and limit the effect on customer rates. Those are policy objectives rather than completed outcomes.
