Canada and Alberta put $24.8 million into rural high-speed Internet

The federal and Alberta governments have announced $24.8 million for two projects intended to bring high-speed Internet service to 1,833 rural and remote households in the province.

The funding comes through an existing federal-provincial broadband agreement announced in 2022. The September 15 release identifies the number of households and total funding but does not give a completion date in the main announcement.

National targets

Canada’s connectivity strategy defines high-speed access as at least 50 megabits per second for downloads and 10 megabits per second for uploads.

Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada says 97.4% of Canadian households and 98.1% of Alberta households currently have access at that level. The federal targets are 98% of Canadian households by the end of 2026 and universal access by 2030.
