The province says planned legislation would reduce its gasoline and diesel tax to zero through March 31, 2027, with a price-triggered extension mechanism.

Newfoundland and Labrador says it will propose legislation to reduce its provincial gasoline and diesel tax to zero from December 1, 2026, through March 31, 2027.

The change has not yet taken effect. The provincial government said on October 26 that legislative amendments would be introduced during the week, meaning the plan remains subject to approval.

The province also plans a mechanism that would keep the tax at zero while fuel prices remain above a specified threshold. Its release did not set out the threshold calculation in detail.

Finance Minister Craig Westcott said the temporary measure is expected to provide about $25 million in relief. That figure is the government’s estimate, not a final accounting of savings.

The announcement applies to the provincial portion of gasoline and diesel tax. Other components of the retail pump price, including federal charges and market prices, are separate.
