The final section of the Team Gushue Highway opened October 23, completing a north–south connection intended to improve travel between St. John’s, Mount Pearl and nearby communities.

The extension runs from Topsail Road to the Commonwealth Avenue, Brookfield Road and Heavy Tree Road area, connecting to the Pitts Memorial Drive and Robert E. Howlett Memorial Drive interchange through a roundabout corridor.

The completed work includes two new roundabouts, an overpass, auxiliary access roads and a realigned section of Brookfield Road now called Brookfield Place. The province said the route should provide southern Avalon residents with more direct access to major health and post-secondary facilities.

The multi-year project was funded through a combined $30-million federal and provincial investment under the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program.
