Food Banks Canada and Second Harvest have been selected as the first administrators of the federal Local Food Infrastructure Fund’s Community Support Stream, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada announced October 23.

Each organization is slated to receive up to $10 million and distribute it through applications from eligible food banks and not-for-profit community organizations. The money is intended to help those groups acquire and distribute food.

Community organizations can use the federal program’s Initial Recipient Finder to determine which organization covers their area and needs. Ottawa said the two national networks collectively reach partners in every province and territory.

The projects and final amounts remain subject to contribution agreements. Food Banks Canada works with a network of more than 5,500 food banks and community organizations, while Second Harvest focuses on redirecting surplus food.
