Québec post-production revenue falls 29% as B.C. gains share

Québec’s film and video post-production industry recorded a 29.0% drop in operating revenue in 2025, a decline of $401.1 million, according to Statistics Canada.

The province’s share of Canadian post-production revenue fell to 40.7% from 49.0% in 2023, its lowest proportion since 2017. British Columbia’s revenue rose by $76.7 million to $884.4 million, giving it a 36.8% national share.

Across Canada, post-production operating revenue totalled $2.4 billion, down 14.7% from 2023 but still 18.7% above the 2019 level. Operating expenses fell 15.2% to $2.2 billion, lifting the industry’s operating profit margin from 6.0% to 6.7%.

Salaries, wages, commissions and benefits declined 14.4% to $1.2 billion. Québec also lost ground in visual-effects work: its share fell to 40.4%, while British Columbia reached 41.7% and moved ahead.

The release reports industry revenue, not the number of productions completed or jobs located in any one Montréal studio.
