Canola prices increased for a seventh consecutive month in August, while lentil and slaughter-cattle prices moved lower in several provinces, Statistics Canada reported October 9.
Canola rose 6.6% from July in Saskatchewan and 4.0% in Alberta. Compared with August 2025, prices were up 16.5% in Saskatchewan and 15.7% in Manitoba. Wheat excluding durum gained between 1.4% and 1.8% across the Prairie provinces.
Lentil prices moved in the opposite direction. They fell 5.6% in Alberta during the month and were 19.2% lower than a year earlier in Saskatchewan.
Slaughter-cattle prices declined month over month in every province, ending a run of at least six consecutive increases in most regions. On a year-over-year basis, however, slaughter-cattle prices remained higher everywhere except Québec. Hog prices rose in most provinces, with Alberta and Manitoba the exceptions.
The farm product price index tracks prices received by farmers at the first transaction point; it is not a measure of grocery-store prices.
