The federal government says current and planned defence projects in Alberta represent about $8 billion in investment, with major work at Canadian Forces bases in Cold Lake, Suffield and Edmonton.

National Defence listed nearly $4 billion for future-fighter infrastructure at 4 Wing Cold Lake, $750 million for a chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosives research facility at CFB Suffield, and $550 million for the western operating base of the CC-330 Husky fleet.

The department also pointed to more than $580 million in planned maintenance at Alberta military installations over three years. Ottawa estimates the broader investments could support between 29,000 and 38,000 jobs over five to 10 years; that figure is a government projection, not a completed employment count.

Defence Minister David McGuinty announced that the Defence Drone Initiative Marketplace is reopening its request for supply arrangements. The October 7 release also identifies more than $8 million for seven Alberta projects.
