Farm Credit Canada has opened a $1-billion project-finance fund for mid-sized agri-food infrastructure, while committing another $150 million to Velocity Agri-Capital Partners.

The federal agriculture department announced the two measures Monday. It says the new Farm Credit Canada fund will target capital-intensive projects that expand food processing, infrastructure and technology across Canada.

The $150-million commitment to Velocity is intended for investments in agri-food and agricultural technology across the value chain. It forms part of Farm Credit Canada Capital’s previously announced commitment to invest $2 billion by 2030.

The fund has begun its first phase with an expression-of-interest process. The announcement describes financing commitments and intended outcomes; it does not mean all of the money has already been distributed or that the projects are complete.
