Montréal and STM announce six measures to improve metro safety
Montréal and the STM have announced added constables, police resources, social-intervention teams and service improvements for the metro.

Montréal and the Société de transport de Montréal have announced six measures intended to improve safety and the sense of security in the metro network.
The city plans to provide $6.4 million annually so the STM can add 52 special constables, bringing the force to 230 by the end of 2027. The SPVM plans to assign 12 additional officers this autumn as hiring permits. The STM will also spend $3 million modernizing its surveillance centre, which receives images from about 2,500 cameras.
Other measures include expanding specialized social-intervention teams, increasing Équipe mobile de médiation et d’intervention sociale brigades from two to six, and adding Ambulance Saint-Jean outreach teams. Metro service is planned to rise by five per cent from fall 2027, with an emphasis on evening service. The announcement describes several staged plans rather than completed changes.
