Montréal’s Sud-Ouest borough has closed Rue Saint-Ambroise to automobile traffic near the Canada Malting site in Saint-Henri while safety work and an independent engineering review proceed.

The borough said on October 1 that the property owner submitted an engineer’s report calling for the urgent demolition of a section of the building facing the street. Because of the site’s heritage value and the complexity of the request, the borough is commissioning a second opinion to determine whether emergency demolition is justified.

The owner is responsible for securing both the street and the site and for communicating with nearby residents, the borough said. No reopening time for automobile traffic was given in the release.

The borough also reiterated that any future redevelopment must include a substantial share of social housing, improve access to the Lachine Canal, contribute to a complete neighbourhood and respect the site’s industrial heritage. Those are conditions for a future project, not an approved redevelopment plan.
