Canada brings single online asylum-claim process into force

New federal regulations create one online application process for inland and port-of-entry asylum claims and add rules for paused or reinstated cases.

Canada brought new asylum-processing regulations into force on November 3, replacing separate application paths with a single online process for people who make claims inland or at a port of entry.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada says the regulations also establish timelines and procedures for claims that are withdrawn, abandoned or later reinstated. Eligible claimants can continue to receive work permits, while officials say exceptions are available for people who need accommodation because of vulnerability or other barriers.

The changes implement provisions of the Strengthening Canada’s Immigration System and Borders Act. They concern how claims are submitted and managed; they do not guarantee that any individual claim will be accepted.

The federal department also reported that claims from January through August 2026 were 52 per cent lower than in the same period of 2025 and 68 per cent lower than in 2024. Those comparisons are government figures.
