Parks Canada completes $34.6-million national wildfire equipment hub

Parks Canada says construction is substantially complete on a $34.6-million national wildfire equipment cache in Banff National Park.

The agency announced the facility’s completion September 11. It will serve as a central storage and deployment hub for specialized wildfire equipment used at Parks Canada-administered places across the country.

Equipment can support other jurisdictions

Parks Canada says the equipment will be kept ready for rapid mobilization. Resources can also be shared with provincial and territorial fire agencies through the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre when assistance is requested.

The agency manages wildfire response across roughly 350,000 square kilometres of federal Crown land. It reports managing more than 500 wildfires at national parks and historic sites over the past five years, as well as responding to 50 requests for assistance in Canada and abroad.

The new facility is an operational asset, not a forecast that every wildfire can be contained. Parks Canada says its broader program also uses prescribed fire, forest thinning, community fire guards and FireSmart guidance to reduce risk.
