The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission has launched a free, downloadable database intended to make it easier for radio stations to identify Canadian music.

The initial release consolidates information used by broadcasters to determine whether popular songs qualify as Canadian content. The regulator says it will add more recent and older music over time, including French-language, Indigenous-language and third-language works.

The database is available through the CRTC’s website and can be downloaded for use by stations and other interested users. The commission is also inviting feedback as it develops the resource.

The launch changes access to the information used in Canadian-content assessments; it does not itself change the underlying radio-content requirements.
