The federal government is providing $760,207 for the planned Parc naturel de la Sagamité, a 153-hectare conservation and recreation area north of Notre-Dame-des-Laurentides in Québec City.

Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada announced the funding on October 19 through the Natural Infrastructure Fund. The site was acquired in 2022 with support from Ducks Unlimited Canada and is protected by a perpetual conservation easement.

The federal release says the property’s wetlands and forests support biodiversity and help protect water quality in the Lake Saint-Charles watershed, which is important to Québec City’s drinking-water supply.

This is a forward-looking project, not a completed park. Québec City plans to advance the project in 2027, with work expected to begin in fall 2027. A preliminary concept includes trails, lookouts, stream crossings and ecological restoration, and the city plans a public information session.

Although the project is outside Montréal, it illustrates how protected natural areas can combine watershed protection, habitat conservation and public access—issues also relevant to growing communities across the West Island.
