Dollard-des-Ormeaux renews coyote-safety reminder for autumn

Dollard-des-Ormeaux is reminding residents to keep their distance from coyotes, avoid feeding them and report sightings through Montréal’s Info-coyote line.

Dollard-des-Ormeaux highlighted an autumn urban-coyote explainer on October 7, renewing practical guidance for residents who encounter the animals in neighbourhoods and parks.

The city’s urban-coyote guidance, published January 8 and promoted again this week, advises people to stay calm, give the animal space and prevent dogs from approaching it. Residents should move away calmly without turning their back and maintain eye contact.

If a coyote comes too close, the city advises making yourself look larger, waving your arms and making noise. Residents should never feed or approach a coyote, even if it appears calm or injured, because feeding can make wild animals lose their natural caution around people.

Sightings can be reported to Montréal’s Info-coyote line at 438-872-COYO (2696). An animal posing an immediate danger should be reported through emergency services.
