Former Canadiens defenceman Lyle Odelein dies at 58

Lyle Odelein, a former Montréal Canadiens defenceman and member of the club’s 1993 Stanley Cup championship team, has died at age 58.

The Canadiens announced his death on October 3, saying Odelein died Friday. The team did not disclose a cause.

Born in Quill Lake, Saskatchewan, Odelein was selected by Montréal in the seventh round of the 1986 NHL Draft. He played 420 regular-season games for the Canadiens from 1990 to 1996, recording 20 goals and 75 assists.

He was part of the 1993 team that won the franchise’s most recent Stanley Cup. The Canadiens said his 1,357 penalty minutes rank second in club history.

Across a 16-season NHL career, Odelein played 1,056 games and collected 252 points. In addition to Montréal, he played for New Jersey, Phoenix, Columbus, Chicago, Dallas, Florida and Pittsburgh.

The Canadiens offered condolences to Odelein’s family, friends and loved ones.
