Federal seed unit will operate at two Saskatchewan sites in 2027

Agriculture Canada says Indian Head and Saskatoon will share Seed Increase Unit operations in 2027 before a full transfer to Saskatoon in 2028.

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada says its Seed Increase Unit will operate from both Indian Head and Saskatoon during the 2027 growing season, delaying the full move to Saskatoon until 2028.

The department said on October 2 that Indian Head Research Farm will maintain full field capacity for all crops in 2027, including wheat and forages, and will continue to handle seed processing and storage during the transition year.

At the same time, the Saskatoon Research and Development Centre will host field operations for oats, barley, triticale, fall rye and peas. Processing for those Saskatoon-grown crops will occur there, while storage remains at Indian Head.

The department characterized the two-site plan as a transition, not a reversal of the announced relocation: the unit is still scheduled to move fully to Saskatoon in 2028.
