Barrie offered up to $129.2 million after cutting development charges

Barrie could receive up to $129.2 million from Canada and Ontario for wastewater infrastructure after the city committed to cut residential development charges by 50 per cent for three years.

The reduction runs from March 30, 2026 to March 31, 2029. Barrie estimates it could lower homebuilding costs by as much as $62,223 per unit and, together with expanded HST relief, unlock 23,364 homes. Those figures are city and government estimates, not completed housing outcomes.

The proposed wastewater work includes a new digester, upgrades to solids treatment and electrical systems, and a new nutrient-removal train. Funding is conditional on federal-provincial and provincial-municipal agreements, due diligence and final project approval.
