Chief Mountain border crossing to close September 30

The Chief Mountain border crossing in southern Alberta will close for the season at 6 p.m. Mountain time on Wednesday, September 30.

The Canada Border Services Agency said the crossing will reopen in spring 2027. The high-elevation port operates only from May through September because of harsh winter conditions.

During the closure, travellers can use the Carway, Del Bonita or Coutts ports of entry. Chief Mountain is on Alberta Highway 6 at the edge of Waterton Lakes National Park and connects with Montana.

CBSA reported that 53,993 travellers entered Canada at Chief Mountain during the 2026 season through September 7, nearly 5,000 more than in the previous season. Travellers using alternatives should check current opening hours and border wait times before leaving.
