Canadian investment in building construction rose 1.2% in July to a seasonally adjusted $23.6 billion, Statistics Canada reported Monday.

The September 21 release put the monthly increase at $270.9 million. Non-residential construction investment climbed 3.2%, while residential investment edged up 0.3%. The total was 8.1% higher than in July 2025.

Institutional work contributed most to the non-residential gain, increasing 7.4% to $2.3 billion. Industrial investment rose 2.8% to $1.5 billion and commercial investment increased 0.8% to $3.5 billion.

Residential investment reached $16.2 billion. A 3.5% increase in single-family construction was partly offset by a 2.6% decline in multi-unit construction.

The investment series measures the value of construction put in place, which is different from the value of permits issued. Statistics Canada is scheduled to release August figures on October 21.
