Canadian new-home prices edge down 0.1% in August; Québec flat

Selling prices for new houses across Canada edged down 0.1% in August, while Québec’s provincial index was unchanged, according to Statistics Canada.

Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia each recorded a 0.1% monthly decline. Nova Scotia posted a 0.2% decrease, while Manitoba rose 0.2%. The remaining provincial indexes were unchanged.

The New Housing Price Index measures changes in prices agreed between builders and buyers when contracts are signed. It covers new single-detached, semi-detached and townhouse properties.

The measure does not track resale homes, and it is not a complete measure of every type of residential property. Prices in the index exclude value-added taxes such as GST or HST.
