Wheat estimate drops as corn and soybean crops rise

Statistics Canada’s latest model-based crop estimates point to smaller wheat and canola harvests in 2026, alongside larger corn and soybean crops.

Total wheat production is estimated at 36.1 million tonnes, down 10.9% from 2025. Canola is estimated at 22.1 million tonnes, a decrease of 0.8%.

Soybean production is estimated at 7.5 million tonnes, up 7.8%, while corn for grain is estimated at 16.5 million tonnes, an increase of 11.3%.

The agency says growing conditions varied across the Prairies during the season. Rainfall was above average in western Québec during the reference period.

These are preliminary estimates produced with satellite imagery, agroclimatic data and statistical models; they are not final measured harvest totals.
