Meal-kit delivery giant HelloFresh has acquired 70 all-electric vans from Rivian, becoming the first major business customer to purchase Rivian’s commercial electric vehicles after the automaker’s exclusive arrangement with Amazon concluded.
These 70 electric vans represent close to a quarter of HelloFresh’s total fleet. In a statement on Wednesday, the company highlighted that integrating these vehicles has already allowed it to save approximately 20,000 gallons of fuel and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 200 metric tons.
Rivian began producing commercial electric delivery vans in 2021 following a significant investment from Amazon, which initially ordered approximately 100,000 custom vehicles to substantially diminish its environmental impact. This arrangement included an exclusivity clause that effectively barred other companies from purchasing Rivian’s vans, but that arrangement ended in November 2023. Although Rivian continued to supply vans exclusively to Amazon through early 2025, the automaker began actively preparing to open sales to a wider range of customers.
In February 2025, Rivian announced that its commercial vans would become broadly available to businesses outside of Amazon. The period between the announcement of the exclusivity deal ending and general availability was spent developing and enhancing necessary digital platforms, service infrastructure, and customer support processes. During that window, Rivian also conducted pilot tests and customer trials to gather valuable feedback from potential fleet customers.
HelloFresh is the first company outside of Amazon to publicly acknowledge adoption of Rivian’s commercial vehicles. Meanwhile, Rivian continues to supply vans to Amazon, which had received around 20,000 of these electric vehicles as of early 2025.
