OpenAI is reportedly considering establishing data centers in the United Arab Emirates, a strategic move aimed at significantly increasing its presence in the Middle East. An official announcement could occur as early as this week.
This potential development continues the company’s longstanding relationship with the UAE. In 2023, OpenAI collaborated with Abu Dhabi-based artificial intelligence firm G42, a company which subsequently secured a substantial $1.5 billion investment from Microsoft, one of OpenAI’s major backers. Additionally, MGX, an investment entity managed by a member of the Emirati royal family, has recently participated in OpenAI’s funding rounds and has expressed an interest in contributing to the company’s Stargate AI infrastructure initiative.
The reported plan underscores OpenAI’s broader ambition to enhance cooperation with governments considered allies of the United States. Earlier in the month, OpenAI introduced “OpenAI for Countries,” an initiative designed to support nations in developing local AI infrastructure. The company has stated that the initiative aims to foster wider access to AI, helping to promote democratic values through technological advancement.
