Black Forest Labs, the AI startup known for once powering the image generation features of the Grok chatbot from X, has unveiled a new suite of AI-powered image generation and editing models. The new lineup, called Flux.1 Kontext, includes versatile models capable of not just creating entirely new images from textual descriptions, but also seamlessly editing existing images using contextually informed prompts.
According to Black Forest Labs, Flux.1 Kontext models provide cutting-edge performance with remarkable fidelity to prompts, highly realistic rendering, and competitive typography—all while running up to eight times faster than today’s leading image generation tools.
The launch arrives amidst a rapidly escalating competition in the generative AI space. Google recently showcased its latest Imagen 4 at the I/O developer conference, while OpenAI earlier this year significantly upgraded ChatGPT’s image-creating capabilities, gaining popularity for stylistically distinct outputs reminiscent of influential studios such as Studio Ghibli.
The Flux.1 Kontext family consists of two primary models: Flux.1 Kontext [pro] and Flux.1 Kontext [max]. The “pro” version allows users to generate images and refine them iteratively, maintaining consistency in character and style. Meanwhile, the “max” version is built around speed, consistency, and precise adherence to text-prompts for quicker turnaround.
Unlike earlier models that Black Forest Labs offered for download and offline use, both Kontext [pro] and Kontext [max] will only be accessible online. However, the company plans to distribute an open variant known as Flux.1 Kontext [dev] to selected researchers and specialists in a private beta environment, aiming to explore research opportunities and safety implications.
Black Forest Labs also introduced a dedicated Playground platform, making it possible for users to test drive the new models directly through the company’s site without needing third-party integrations. First-time users on the Playground get an initial allowance of 200 credits—enough to generate around a dozen images via Flux.1 Kontext [pro].
Late last year, the Germany-based startup reportedly entered discussions to close a funding round of $100 million, which would value the company at approximately $1 billion. The founding team includes multiple former members of Stability AI, the organization behind the well-known Stable Diffusion model. Its roster of investors includes Andreessen Horowitz, Oculus co-founder Brendan Iribe, and Y Combinator’s Garry Tan.
Since coming into the public eye, Black Forest Labs has consistently rolled out new generative AI tools and enterprise-grade products, including an easy-to-integrate API for businesses looking to incorporate advanced image generation capabilities.
