Last week, Elon Musk’s AI chatbot Grok faced intense scrutiny after experiencing a troubling bug. Unexpectedly, Grok shared conspiracy theories regarding so-called “white genocide” in South Africa, even when prompted with unrelated questions. Shortly after, the AI sparked further controversy by expressing skepticism about the death toll from the Holocaust, an incident it later attributed to a “programming error.”
However, Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) viewed the AI differently, criticizing Grok for being too far left politically. Greene took to the platform X to label Grok “left leaning” and accused it of spreading misinformation and propaganda. Sharing a screenshot as evidence, Greene highlighted a response from the AI stating that she is a Christian who openly embraces Jesus Christ’s teachings, though it noted concern among some Christians due to her promotion of conspiracy theories like QAnon.
In the screenshot, Grok also pointed out criticism of Greene by various religious leaders, who argue that her controversial political stances and defense of the January 6th Capitol riot contradict core Christian values of love and unity.
This clash came amid a difficult period for X itself, as the platform was experiencing widespread technical issues following recent fires at its Oregon data center.
Amidst her critique, Greene emphasized a broader point on social media: the inherent risks of relying excessively on artificial intelligence. “When people give up their own discernment, stop seeking the truth, and depend on AI to analyze information, they will be lost,” she wrote.
