At this year’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2025, Apple introduced several noteworthy AI enhancements alongside its operating system and software updates. While the event marked a shift in focus away from Apple’s broader AI platform, known as Apple Intelligence, the company nonetheless showcased several significant new AI tools and integrations.
Visual Intelligence, Apple’s sophisticated AI-driven image analysis technology, will soon offer deeper integrations with screen-based interactions. Users will be able to gather detailed information about anything visible on their iPhone displays, whether it’s identifying plants, recognizing brands and products, or finding related content online. Visual Intelligence conducts searches through platforms like Google Search and ChatGPT, accessible via the Control Center or the Action button. The feature will launch with iOS 26 later this year.
In a notable collaboration, ChatGPT has now been integrated into Image Playground, Apple’s AI-assisted image generation app. With this addition, users can generate and style images through textual prompts in styles including anime, oil painting, and watercolor. Image Playground users will also be able to use direct commands with ChatGPT prompts to generate entirely original artworks.
Additionally, Apple’s newly announced Workout Buddy offers users personalized fitness coaching enhanced by advanced AI. Activated in the Workout app, Workout Buddy provides encouragement and motivation via an intuitive text-to-speech system, mirroring the voice and feedback of a human personal trainer. During a session, the AI tracks performance milestones, offering real-time positive reinforcement and summarizing workout metrics like pace and heart rate upon completion.
Apple Intelligence further extends its capabilities through the introduction of Live Translation, enabling seamless, real-time language translation during FaceTime, Messages, and traditional phone calls. FaceTime users will benefit from immediate translated captions, while phone calls will feature instantaneous spoken translations.
Two AI enhancements were announced for managing phone calls: Call Screening and Hold Assist. Call Screening automatically answers unfamiliar numbers in the background, allowing users to learn who is calling and assess urgency before picking up. Hold Assist detects hold music during calls to help users effectively multitask, notifying them promptly when a real representative rejoins the line.
Within the Messages app, Apple Intelligence will now suggest creating polls directly from conversation contexts. For example, a discussion about dining choices can prompt a recommendation to set up a quick poll, streamlining group decision-making.
Apple’s Shortcuts app, benefiting from deeper AI integration, will enable users to employ AI-driven functionalities like automated text summarization and optimized user actions, significantly enhancing productivity and convenience within created shortcuts.
Spotlight search on Mac is also receiving a subtle improvement, gaining greater contextual understanding through updated Apple Intelligence. The enhancements will yield more tailored suggestions based on user habits and immediate needs, considerably improving the overall user experience.
For developers, Apple’s newly introduced Foundation Models framework opens direct access to the company’s AI capabilities even offline. This new initiative is designed to help software creators implement sophisticated AI functions into third-party apps without constant internet dependency, facilitating innovation within the broader Apple ecosystem.
One anticipated announcement that fell short of expectations was the next evolution of an AI-improved Siri. Craig Federighi, Apple’s SVP of Software Engineering, acknowledged that the anticipated Siri updates are delayed, stating the company had nothing further to announce at this time, leaving future developments uncertain until next year.
