OpenAI is exploring a new feature that would let users sign into third-party apps using their ChatGPT accounts, the company revealed on a recently published web page. Currently, OpenAI is assessing interest among developers who may want to add this login capability to their applications.
As one of the fastest-growing consumer applications globally, ChatGPT now boasts around 600 million monthly active users, a milestone that highlights its significant market presence. Leveraging this popularity, OpenAI aims to broaden its consumer footprint into diverse sectors including online shopping, social media, and personal devices. Introducing a “Sign in with ChatGPT” option could help the company compete directly with tech giants like Apple, Google, and Microsoft, all of which offer their own convenient third-party app login systems for users.
Earlier in May, OpenAI initiated a preview period of the login feature for developers using Codex CLI, the company’s open-source artificial intelligence coding tool for terminals. This introduced integration allowed developers to link ChatGPT’s Free, Plus, or Pro accounts to their API accounts. To encourage uptake, OpenAI provided financial incentives—offering ChatGPT Plus subscribers $5 of API credit and Pro subscribers $50 upon signing in with the service.
OpenAI’s developer interest form suggests ambitions for broad integration, with questions targeting potential partners of varying user base sizes, from small-scale services with fewer than 1,000 weekly users to giant platforms commanding over 100 million weekly users. The survey also inquiries about developers’ current monetization methods for AI-driven features and whether they already utilize OpenAI’s API services.
While CEO Sam Altman had hinted at a possible “Sign in with OpenAI” feature as early as 2023, recent developments indicate the company is now actively pursuing this concept in earnest. Still unclear, however, is the specific timeline for public release or exactly how many developers have shown interest in partnering on such integration.
OpenAI has not yet commented publicly regarding these developments.
