AllTrails, acclaimed as the iPhone App of the Year in 2023, is introducing a premium annual subscription plan named “Peak,” priced at $80. This membership is set to feature a suite of enhanced tools powered by artificial intelligence, designed specifically for avid hikers and bikers.
Among the key innovations in the Peak subscription package are AI-generated custom trail routes, real-time trail condition forecasts, trail traffic heatmaps, and an outdoor identification tool capable of recognizing trees, plants, and flowers through a smartphone camera.
The AI-powered custom routes feature enables users to design personalized trails from scratch or modify existing ones. Enhanced smart-routing capabilities leverage AI to choose paths that are shorter, less strenuous, or more scenic, based on user preferences.
In addition, Peak subscribers will benefit from detailed trail condition projections incorporating temperature, precipitation levels, snow depth estimates, and important alerts reflecting air quality and mosquito activity. An upcoming update will expand this feature to include information on specific terrain conditions such as pavement, gravel, or mud.
The new heatmap functionality employs anonymized data from millions of AllTrails users, providing estimates of trail popularity to help hikers choose either less busy paths for solitude or crowded trails for social or safety reasons.
Starting this summer, an innovative Outdoor Lens tool will be introduced, allowing members to instantly identify and log various plants and flowers into their AllTrails application. The company plans to further enhance this tool’s capabilities in subsequent updates.
The Peak membership will initially roll out in the next several weeks to a selective user base and will subsequently be made available globally to all AllTrails users by June. Currently, interested subscribers can register for early access via the AllTrails website.
Beyond this premium offering, AllTrails is also enhancing its existing Base and Plus membership tiers. The Base option remains free, offering trail maps, community reviews, and basic navigation tools. Plus members benefit from additional features such as offline maps, wrong-turn alerts, 3D trail previews, and live trail activity sharing.
Both Base and Plus memberships will gain a new Points of Interest feature, marking over 500,000 viewpoints, landmarks, and facilities directly on the maps. Meanwhile, Plus subscribers will receive added value through Offline Area, which allows localized downloading of high-resolution maps for comprehensive offline exploration.
The launch of Peak is viewed as a strategic response to intensified competition from Apple, which recently incorporated advanced trail and map functionalities—including topographic mapping, offline capabilities, and custom routes—directly into its platform. This escalation emerges a few years after AllTrails raised significant funding driven by increased outdoor recreation during the COVID pandemic.
Overall, the introduction of Peak represents AllTrails’ proactive measures to maintain its leadership and attract dedicated outdoor enthusiasts through state-of-the-art technologies and expanded user engagement opportunities.
