Uber’s Secretive Robotic Revolution: What Arlington’s Mysterious Self-Driving Launch Means for the Future of Urban Transport

May Mobility, an autonomous vehicle startup, will launch its robotaxi services on Uber’s platform by the end of 2025, beginning with operations in Arlington, Texas. This deployment marks the start of a broader, multi-year partnership designed to expand autonomous transportation options for riders in cities across the United States.

By partnering with Uber, May Mobility takes a significant step forward from its traditional microtransit model, which has primarily consisted of services confined to campuses and planned communities. Uber, for its part, continues to diversify its autonomous vehicle partnerships, already offering Waymo robotaxis on its app in cities such as Phoenix and Austin, with an upcoming launch planned this summer in Atlanta. This will likely set Uber in direct competition with Lyft, which recently announced a similar collaboration with May Mobility to deploy autonomous vehicles in Atlanta as well.

Initially, passengers hailing rides within Arlington will have the option of selecting from May Mobility’s specialized hybrid Toyota Sienna Autono-MaaS vehicles, outfitted with advanced self-driving technology. These vehicles will initially include human safety drivers to monitor operations, eventually transitioning toward completely driverless rides.

Following the pilot program in Arlington, Uber and May Mobility intend to expand service to additional cities starting in 2026, aiming to roll out “thousands” of autonomous cars within the following years.

May Mobility has previously conducted on-demand automated shuttle trials in several controlled and smaller-scale environments across the U.S., including Ann Arbor, Grand Rapids (Minnesota), Peachtree Corners (near Atlanta), Miami, Sun City, and Arlington.
