Uber’s Next Big Move: Mysterious Partnerships Illuminate Future of Self-Driving Taxis Across Continents

Uber announced on Friday that it has partnered with Chinese autonomous driving startup Momenta, further expanding its network of self-driving technology providers. The deal underscores Uber’s strategic approach to autonomous vehicles, leveraging its market dominance in ride-hailing and delivery services while depending on external tech partners for self-driving capabilities.

Under the new partnership, Uber will begin integrating Momenta’s autonomous robotaxis into its platform across select European markets beginning in early 2026. Initially, safety operators will remain onboard the vehicles.

Momenta CEO Xudong Cao hailed the collaboration as a significant step toward fulfilling the broader ecosystem required for scaling autonomous driving technology globally.

This announcement comes just one day after Uber revealed a similar collaboration with May Mobility, a self-driving company based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Uber’s growing roster of autonomous vehicle partners includes major firms such as Waymo, Volkswagen, Wayve, and WeRide, among others.

The fast-paced expansion of Uber’s autonomous vehicle partnerships arrives amid growing competitive pressures, notably from Tesla, which plans to debut its first robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, this summer. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has long asserted that Tesla vehicles could, in the future, transform into fully autonomous ride-sharing vehicles via software updates alone.

Uber previously maintained its in-house autonomous vehicle division but divested this business unit to Aurora Innovation back in 2020.
