X has started rolling out support for 4K resolution video uploads as part of its broader strategy to boost user engagement and retain content creators who might otherwise turn to rival platforms like YouTube or Vimeo. Currently, this enhanced feature is only available to a select group of creators, but it will soon expand to include all X premium subscribers, according to a recent announcement from the company’s engineering team.
Until now, X’s paying subscribers have been limited to uploading videos up to 1080p quality, with a maximum file size of 8GB and video lengths nearing three hours, as stated in the platform’s support documentation. With the introduction of higher-resolution uploads, these earlier limits might also undergo adjustments to better accommodate 4K content.
Ever since Elon Musk acquired the platform, X has consistently encouraged users to post more video content by gradually increasing subscriber upload capabilities and adding new video-friendly features. Earlier this year, the company introduced a dedicated vertical video feed complete with a convenient shortcut on the application’s homepage, strategically timed to capitalize on growing uncertainty surrounding TikTok’s availability in the U.S.
These developments underscore X’s continued push to establish itself as a primary destination for diverse video content, competing directly against well-established platforms in a crowded digital media landscape.
