Hugging Face, better recognized for its leading AI platform, has introduced a new 3D-printed robotic arm named the SO-101, designed to handle straightforward tasks such as picking up and repositioning items. This latest offering builds upon Hugging Face’s earlier release, the SO-100, which debuted last year to significant acclaim and affordability, retailing at approximately $100.
Hugging Face’s robotics segment, LeRobot, again collaborated with the French firm The Robot Studio for the SO-101. Additional partnerships with robotics retailer Wowrobo, IoT hardware supplier Seeedstudio, and parts distributor Partabot demonstrate the company’s expanding dedication to affordable robotics innovation.
Compared to its predecessor, the SO-101 offers notable improvements, including faster and simpler assembly processes and upgraded motors that considerably reduce friction, allowing the robotic arm to better support its own weight and operate more smoothly. Furthermore, the SO-101 is equipped with a camera and is capable of being trained through an AI method called reinforcement learning, enabling it to autonomously master tasks like picking up Lego pieces and placing them accurately in a container.
Starting at the same price point of $100, it is worth noting, however, that the final retail pricing may vary significantly, spanning upwards of $500 depending on assembly options, import tariffs, and choice of vendor.
The move underscores Hugging Face’s sharply increasing focus on robotics. Earlier this month, the company further expanded its robotics capabilities by announcing the acquisition of France-based startup Pollen Robotics, known especially for its humanoid robot, Reachy 2. With leadership guided by Remi Cadene, once an engineer on Tesla’s Optimus project, Hugging Face intends to launch Reachy 2 commercially while encouraging community-driven improvements through open-source software contributions.
