A feature film dramatizing the turbulent five-day period at OpenAI, during which co-founder and CEO Sam Altman was abruptly fired and swiftly reinstated, is reportedly in the works. The movie, provisionally titled “Artificial,” is under development by Amazon MGM Studios.
Sources familiar with the project indicate that acclaimed director Luca Guadagnino, best known for films like “Call Me By Your Name” and “Challengers,” is in negotiations to helm the project. Casting considerations reportedly include Andrew Garfield, who would portray Altman, while Monica Barbaro is being eyed for the role of former CTO Mira Murati. Actor Yura Borisov could potentially portray OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever, the board member instrumental in Altman’s initial dismissal.
“Saturday Night Live” writer Simon Rich is said to have penned the screenplay, suggesting that the film will infuse elements of humor into its portrayal of these extraordinary events.
The saga dates back to November 2023, when OpenAI’s board dismissed Altman, citing a loss of trust in his leadership capabilities. Within days, following intensive negotiations and widespread scrutiny, Altman was reinstated in his position, adding another remarkable chapter to Silicon Valley’s history of corporate drama.
As the public curiosity and familiarity with generative AI tools like ChatGPT expand, this adaptation promises to captivate audiences by providing an insightful yet entertaining look into one of the most profound corporate shake-ups in tech history.
