OpenAI is reportedly considering the acquisition of an AI hardware startup founded by former Apple design chief Jony Ive along with OpenAI’s current CEO, Sam Altman. The startup, named io Products, could be valued at approximately $500 million in the event of a deal, according to recent reports.
Jony Ive, who departed Apple in 2019 to establish his independent design firm, LoveFrom, publicly confirmed last year that he was partnering with Altman to develop the AI-focused hardware venture. The company has attracted investment from a number of supporters, including Emerson Collective, the philanthropic organization founded by Laurene Powell Jobs.
Although discussions are ongoing about a possible acquisition, sources indicate OpenAI may also consider alternative arrangements, such as strategic partnerships with io Products. Currently, io Products employs a select group of experienced designers, including former Apple staff members Tang Tan and Evans Hankey.
io Products is said to be exploring various concepts for AI-driven devices, particularly exploring ideas in the smart-home segment. As previously reported, the startup explicitly emphasized its intent to create devices designed to be significantly less socially intrusive than contemporary smartphones.
