“Secret Expansion: OpenAI’s Bold Move into Asia Reveals New Data Sovereignty Twist”

OpenAI announced on Thursday an expansion of its data residency program into Asia, following the introduction of a similar initiative in Europe earlier this year. The new program is designed to support Asia-based organizations in complying with local data sovereignty regulations while utilizing OpenAI’s range of AI solutions.

The availability of the data residency option extends to users of ChatGPT Enterprise, ChatGPT Edu, and the OpenAI API. Organizations subscribing to these services may now opt to have their data stored exclusively within selected territories, including Japan, India, Singapore, and South Korea.

According to OpenAI, the initiative underscores their ongoing efforts to strengthen data security and privacy. In a company announcement, OpenAI emphasized that data managed through these products remains confidential, secure, and fully controlled by customers, with enhanced protections provided through local storage.

This announcement coincides with OpenAI’s broader strategy to expand its global presence. Earlier this week, the company launched an international initiative called “OpenAI for Countries,” which aims to bolster the necessary infrastructure for delivering AI technologies worldwide.
