Secret Exodus Unveiled: Is OpenAI’s Talent Being Siphoned by Meta’s Mega Deals?

OpenAI is reportedly adjusting its compensation strategy following the recent loss of several senior researchers to Meta. In an internal Slack memo, Chief Research Officer Mark Chen compared the departures to a personal violation, likening it to someone breaking into their home and stealing from them.

Chen assured OpenAI employees that management, including CEO Sam Altman, was actively addressing the situation, saying leadership was working diligently to retain top talent. He noted that the company is recalibrating compensation structures and exploring new ways to reward and recognize key contributors.

Reports in recent days highlighted the departure of eight researchers from OpenAI to Meta. Earlier, Altman openly criticized Meta for allegedly offering excessively generous compensation packages, including claims of “$100 million signing bonuses.” However, Meta executives have internally disputed that claim, although they acknowledged the company has offered multimillion-dollar incentives.
