Salesforce has announced a landmark acquisition of cloud data management provider Informatica in an equity transaction valued at $8 billion. The deal, confirmed Tuesday, significantly advances Salesforce’s strategic initiative to enhance its artificial intelligence and data infrastructure capabilities.
Under the agreed terms, Salesforce will acquire Informatica’s Class A and Class B-1 common stock at a price of $25 per share in cash, accounting for Salesforce’s prior investment in the data management company.
Founded in 1993, Informatica currently supports over 5,000 customers in more than 100 countries, and at the time of the announcement, the company’s market capitalization stood at roughly $7.1 billion.
This acquisition aims to augment Salesforce’s rapidly developing AI framework, specifically by strengthening its data governance and infrastructure. According to Salesforce, the enhanced capabilities will ensure safer, more responsible, and scalable operations for its suite of AI-driven technologies across enterprise environments.
Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff remarked on the transformative significance of the acquisition, noting: “Together, we’ll supercharge Agentforce, Data Cloud, Tableau, MuleSoft, and Customer 360, enabling autonomous agents to operate intelligently, contextually, and confidently throughout every level of an enterprise. This is a crucial step toward providing enterprise-grade artificial intelligence integrated deeply and securely with the world’s data.”
Speculation surrounding a potential integration between Salesforce and Informatica first arose in April 2024, initially prompting declines in both companies’ stock values amid concerns of complexity in assimilation and strategic viability. Informatica at that time publicly denied being up for sale.
This acquisition of Informatica is Salesforce’s second prominent data management purchase within the past year, following the company’s $1.9 billion cash deal for Own Company last September. Salesforce general manager Steve Fisher previously emphasized the increasing importance of robust data management and security measures prompted by this earlier acquisition.
Salesforce has not yet provided additional details beyond the initial announcement.
