U.S. President Donald Trump will grant an additional 90-day extension to determine TikTok’s future in the United States, the White House announced on Tuesday. The current reprieve, enacted in April, was set to expire on June 19.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt released a statement explaining, “President Trump will issue another executive order this week to ensure TikTok continues operations without interruption. The President has consistently stated that he does not wish to see TikTok shut down. Over the next 90 days, the administration will diligently work towards finalizing a deal that guarantees Americans can use the app while confidently knowing their data remains safe and well-protected.”
Earlier this year, in January, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld legislation supporting a ban on TikTok, leading to app platforms and online services stepping back from supporting the application nationwide. Shortly after his inauguration, President Trump signed an executive order delaying the TikTok ban for 75 days, providing time to negotiate with the app’s owner, ByteDance, to divest its U.S. operations. He then issued another 75-day extension in early April, further postponing enforcement action against the popular short-form video application.
