Mysterious Multibillion-Dollar AI Startup Emerges: What’s Safe Superintelligence Really Up To?

Safe Superintelligence (SSI), the artificial intelligence startup founded and led by OpenAI co-founder and former chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, has reportedly raised an additional $2 billion in funding, bringing the company’s valuation to approximately $32 billion.

Earlier fundraising had already seen SSI receive $1 billion, and prior reports had signaled that another $1 billion round was being negotiated. Greenoaks is said to have led this most recent round, although representatives from Safe Superintelligence declined to comment on the specifics of the funding.

Sutskever, who left OpenAI in May of 2024 after a controversial and ultimately unsuccessful attempt to remove the company’s CEO, Sam Altman, launched Safe Superintelligence shortly afterward alongside his co-founders Daniel Gross and Daniel Levy. The founders declared at the outset that the company was dedicated to the singular mission of creating “a safe superintelligence.”

Despite the considerable capital raised, the company’s flagship product remains under wraps, and SSI’s current website offers minimal information other than a brief mission statement.
