Mysterious Bots on the Move: What’s Really Delivering Your Late-Night Snacks in Atlanta?

Uber Eats customers in Atlanta are now able to choose sidewalk robotic delivery for their orders, following the launch of Serve Robotics in the city. This addition, announced on Thursday, closely follows Uber’s introduction of a commercial robotaxi service in collaboration with Waymo just two days earlier.

Serve Robotics, initially spun out of Uber in 2021 before entering the public markets last year, is one of eighteen autonomous vehicle tech companies currently working in partnership with Uber. The company’s goal is to establish an early presence in the expanding autonomous delivery market, capitalizing on consumer interest in innovative mobility choices. According to Uber, its network is now facilitating autonomous vehicle (AV) mobility and delivery services at an annual run rate of around 1.5 million trips.

Atlanta represents the fourth U.S. city where Serve has begun offering its robotic delivery services in partnership with Uber, following successful rollouts in Los Angeles, Miami, and Dallas-Fort Worth. Unlike several competitors who initially focus on college campuses, Serve has exclusively targeted complex urban environments. The company’s CEO, Ali Kashani, explained this strategic decision by emphasizing the greater revenue opportunities and tougher technical challenges posed by city sidewalks compared to self-contained campuses.

Serve Robotics hasn’t disclosed the exact number of robots it has deployed in Atlanta for this initial launch, though it previously indicated plans for significant future growth. The company intends to scale up from a fleet of approximately 100 delivery bots currently operational in Los Angeles to over 2,000 bots across multiple U.S. urban markets before the end of 2025.

According to a company spokesperson, Serve’s robotic deliveries cover a wide swath of metropolitan Atlanta’s neighborhoods, including Midtown, Downtown, and the Old Fourth Ward, with plans already in place to expand this service area over time. Uber Eats customers can utilize the sidewalk robot deliveries between 9 a.m. and 10 p.m. daily.

Initial restaurant partners in Atlanta taking part in the service include Shake Shack, Rreal Tacos, and Ponko Chicken.
