Mitsubishi’s Secret EV Plans: What Are They Cooking Up with Foxconn for Down Under?

Mitsubishi Motors announced on Wednesday that it is in active discussions with Foxconn’s electric vehicle division, Foxtron Vehicle Technology, regarding the provision of an electric vehicle model targeted at the Australian and New Zealand markets. The company hopes to launch the new EV in these regions during the second half of 2026.

A memorandum of understanding has already been signed between Mitsubishi and Foxtron as both sides seek to finalize an agreement. Foxtron, based in Taiwan, is a joint venture established between the electronics giant Foxconn and Yulon Motor Co., a significant player in automotive manufacturing that assembles cars for Nissan.

Additionally, Mitsubishi is leveraging its existing partnership with Nissan and Renault to enhance their collective presence in the global EV market. Under their collaboration framework, Mitsubishi plans to introduce a rebranded version of the Nissan Leaf electric vehicle to North America in late 2026. In reciprocation, Nissan will carry a Mitsubishi-made plug-in hybrid electric vehicle under its own brand name in North America, starting the following year.

In Europe, Mitsubishi intends to sell rebranded electric vehicle models originally produced by Renault, as the three-partner alliance deepens its strategic coordination to boost each company’s electric lineup across major markets.
