Meta has reorganized its artificial intelligence efforts, splitting its AI division into two distinct groups to accelerate product development. One group, known as the AI Products Team, will concentrate on customer-facing initiatives, integrating AI functionalities into Meta’s platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and its recently released standalone AI application.
The other newly formed division, the AGI Foundations Unit, will take on more significant, foundational tasks, primarily focused on advancing the company’s Llama AI models.
This shift in structure does not appear to involve any layoffs or cuts to existing positions.
Facing stiff competition from industry peers—particularly rivals such as OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic—Meta has been proactively expanding its AI-related activities. The recent introduction of the “Llama for Startups” initiative demonstrates Meta’s strategy for promoting the adoption of its generative AI technologies among emerging businesses. Additionally, Meta’s April conference, LlamaCon, positioned the firm directly against competitors like OpenAI, reinforcing its intent to compete aggressively in the rapidly evolving AI space.
