Leaked information has revealed that xAI is working on a sophisticated file editing feature for its AI assistant Grok, highlighting the company’s ambition to compete directly with similar AI productivity tools from OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft.
According to findings released by reverse engineer Nima Owji, the upcoming “advanced file editor” not only manages documents but is notably designed to handle spreadsheets as well. Owji states that the editor allows users to interact with Grok seamlessly—actively conversing and enlisting assistance while editing and viewing spreadsheet data simultaneously.
Although xAI has remained relatively discreet regarding its broader strategy for an integrated AI-driven productivity ecosystem, recent developments indicate a clear trajectory toward multifunctional workspace tools. In April 2025, the company unveiled Grok Studio, a versatile dual-view application enabling users to co-create text documents, code, reports, and even browser-based games with AI support. Additionally, xAI recently provided users with the capability to organize files and conversations through its new Workspaces functionality.
While OpenAI and Microsoft offer competitive solutions, Google’s Gemini Workspace stands out as the closest equivalent to what is currently known about xAI’s plans. Gemini Workspace integrates AI-powered editing and chat capabilities directly into Google’s existing productivity applications, such as Sheets and Docs, though it remains exclusively within Google’s proprietary environment.
The current leak does not specify precisely which types of files, beyond spreadsheets, will be supported by the new Grok editor. It also remains unclear if xAI intends to expand further into a full-fledged productivity suite equivalent to Microsoft 365 or Google’s Workspace.
If confirmed, this development would align closely with Elon Musk’s broader objective of evolving X into an expansive “everything app,” encompassing productivity tools, document collaboration, communication features, social networking, and payment solutions.
