Chinese technology giant Huawei is gearing up to directly challenge semiconductor leader Nvidia by developing an advanced artificial intelligence chip. According to recent reports, Huawei is actively advancing development of its latest GPU in the Ascend AI series, named the Ascend 910D. The company has reportedly started engaging with several Chinese firms to identify suitable partners for testing and validation purposes.
Huawei’s new GPU aims to compete directly with Nvidia’s highly popular H100 chip series, extensively used worldwide for training AI models. The announcement emerges amid intensified regulatory scrutiny and recent restrictions imposed by the U.S. government on the export of advanced AI semiconductor technologies to China. Should Huawei successfully roll out its own competitive AI hardware, it would significantly help bridge the gap in supply resulting from tightened U.S. chip export controls.
Huawei has yet to provide an official comment regarding these developments.
