Google has begun experimenting with a new feature called Audio Overviews in Search, designed to provide audible summaries for specific search queries. The company revealed on Friday that this functionality, recently introduced in its AI note-taking and research tool NotebookLM, is now available as part of Google’s Labs, an experimental hub for testing innovative features.
Powered by Google’s latest Gemini AI models, Audio Overviews aim to give users another convenient option to digest information through audio. This capability is particularly targeted toward users who prefer auditory learning or those looking for more accessible content formats.
When Google identifies a query suited for an Audio Overview, it will display an option prompting users to generate a brief audio summary. After opting in, users will see a simple audio player interface with basic playback controls—including play, pause, volume adjustment, and playback speed. Additionally, the interface will display links showing the sources that the AI draws its information from, allowing users to delve deeper into their desired topics.
Google invites users to provide feedback on individual Audio Overviews and overall experience within Labs by rating them with a thumbs-up or thumbs-down.
Previously deployed within the NotebookLM environment, Audio Overviews there allow users to convert personal documents, such as educational materials or legal reports, into structured AI-generated podcasts hosted by virtual presenters. This technology was also integrated into Google’s broader Gemini AI platform earlier this year.
This new experimentation builds upon Google’s existing AI-generated Overviews that provide concise written summaries for select search results. The introduction of audible summaries underscores Google’s ongoing commitment to expanding the accessibility of information, catering to diverse user preferences and promoting information consumption flexibility.
This feature launch comes shortly after recent findings highlighted concerns in the publishing community about Google’s AI-based summaries, indicating a significant negative impact on web traffic traditionally directed to media outlets.
