Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is preparing to host a hackathon next week aimed at developing a comprehensive “mega API” for managing taxpayer data, according to a recent report by Wired.
The upcoming event is reportedly organized by Gavin Kilger and Sam Corcos, two DOGE officials currently working within the Internal Revenue Service. Corcos is also the CEO of health-tech startup Levels and has expressed ambitions within DOGE to create a centralized, unified API for IRS systems, describing it as “one new API to rule them all.”
The proposed API aims to facilitate streamlined access for cloud service providers to sensitive taxpayer information, including names, addresses, social security numbers, tax filings, and employment records. These data points could then be easily integrated into external platforms. It is expected that a third-party vendor would oversee elements of this initiative, with Palantir frequently mentioned as a frontrunner candidate.
An anonymous IRS employee expressed concern over the proposed system, warning that it would effectively grant Musk unprecedented control over Americans’ most sensitive personal and financial information, bypassing established security and data privacy measures.
