Instagram has confirmed it is testing a new repost feature, allowing users to share existing posts directly to their own feeds. Reports of the feature’s appearance surfaced recently among certain users, who noted the option to repost not only other people’s content but their own posts as well.
While this move was anticipated—Instagram had initially explored the reposting concept as early as 2022—it has already sparked discussion among the community. Some users express concerns that introducing reposts into the main feed might further clutter an app already packed with Stories, Reels, Notes, direct messages, and advertisements. Meanwhile, others welcome the update, viewing it as a convenient way to share interesting and engaging content seamlessly, much like they do on platforms such as TikTok and Instagram’s own sister app, Threads.
Currently, Instagram allows users to share others’ posts to their Stories only. An official repost feature within the main feed could eliminate the need for third-party apps or manual workarounds that are prevalent today. It might also help content creators broaden their reach and gain clearer credit for their original posts. At present, reposted memes and popular images often circulate without proper attribution to their original creators, an issue the repost feature could help resolve by clearly linking back to the initial source.
This feature aligns Instagram closely with other platforms that already adopt similar functionalities, most notably inspired by Twitter’s implementation of the “retweet” function back in 2009. As with many experiments from Instagram, it’s yet unclear when—or even if—the repost feature will roll out widely to all users.
